Developments, positively!

Two athletes, a male and a female brought home glory in the form of bronze through an international body building competition. Back home the long established voluntary artists’ studio (VAST), received the status of a Civil Society Organization (CSO) - Two significant events in the past few days with high significance.

Bodybuilding as a fairly new sport in the country has brought home if not more, then definitely a good equal number of medals for the country compared to other sports such as football and archery that receive huge supports in terms of fund.

Given the short time in which the bodybuilding federation hosted one of the SAARC bodybuilding competitions, it is another point of accolade.

Of the two athletes who returned home recently from the Macau 48th Asian Bodybuilding championship, the woman athlete Yeatoeh is an inspiration and encouragement for female-kind of the country.

Body building and its benefits does not just stop at building muscles and achieving a chiseled countenance. It is by the nature of the sport which demands rigorous routines of workouts and the dedication and perseverance required that it ultimately also builds character and personality of a person.

With the sport making increasing visibility in the country and gaining popularity among youths and the adults alike, it’s a good sign. One that points to a healthy nation made up of health-conscious citizens. This development is easily welcome at this point in fast and mixed developments that foster a junk-food craze among the budding generation.

The country is renowned for its unique art and crafts tradition and resting on that mantle, brand Bhutan is still carried out to the rest of the world outside.

The Voluntary Artists’ Studio (VAST) since its formation almost two decades back has stayed true and held its own, carrying on as a non-profit, non-government organization solely driven by the love for art and the objective to promote art.

The VAST over the years has made various efforts in the evolution of traditional art while also promoting opportunities to hone and perfect skills in modern methods to display ones talent in the area.

That way, VAST has truly been an entity genuinely driven by an artist’s appreciation and love for the trade.

Although it is a major achievement for the non-profit studio that pulled on for

17 years and still pushing forward, there is, perhaps only so far good will and intentions will drive a mission or a vision.

Therefore, it is pleasing news that the artists’ studio has now been awarded a CSO status. For instance many ideas and concepts that may have been shelved did not come to life due to shortage of funds; they can now be promoted and processed in all their glorious designs.

A CSO registration, to get down to technicalities, will permit the art studio to advocate for funds, raise funds internationally or locally. It is not entirely a bad thing, at all.

This fine development will hopefully give the boost for VAST to continue on its set path to promote contemporary art and artists all the while aspiring to stamp a national or traditional mark in the global sphere.
